Farm info

Alciones Virginio dos Santos was born in the same community where he now lives and grows coffee in Brejaubinha, Brejetuba.  Alciones produces specialty coffee and has never looked back; with a watchful eye he takes care of all the details required by certifications like fair trade, even though he has not gone through the bureaucracy to earn the official seal. He carefully tends to each stage of production and personally watches to make sure his coffee is kept separate during dry milling.

His two children, Lorrayne and Laila, are as eager as he is for each harvest to arrive to see the final result of the family’s labor and to see more and more neighboring producers also taking greater care with attention to detail in their production processes.

There is a section of Mundo Novo trees on his property inherited from his grandfather and then his father and Alciones is preparing to add more land to his family farm. Currently, the property has 30,000 coffee trees planted, which yield around 400 bags per harvest, of which roughly fifty percent reaches specialty standards. On Sitio Boa Vista Alciones has equipment for depulping coffee, drying on a covered patio, and space for post-harvest sorting.

Region

Montanhas do Espirito Santo

The Montanhas do Espirito Santo region is dominated by small-scale coffee-growers and is characterized by the presence of farmers who are actively engaged in the entire chain of the production process. Growers in Espirito Santo work with family members and build off of traditional knowledge to innovate and improve their quality of life and coffee. Located in the southern area of the Espirito Santo state, where mild temperatures (73ºF) and steep highlands (between 700 and 1,000 meters) favor growing Arabica coffees, this region produces a superb quality coffee with a round body, nice acidity, and fine sweetness. While the most common process for the region is Natural, Pulped Naturals are increasing in popularity.
