Farm info

This washed lot of Bourbon and Caturra coffee is produced by Jose Alfredo Medina Godoy and Miguel Antonio Medina Godoy on Finca Tehuya in Acatenango through San Miguel Coffees. San Miguel has more than 125 years of experience in coffee production. The family business is guided by the principle of taking care of the land to pass it down to the next generation. Finca Tehuya’s attention to detail produces exceptional specialty coffees that showcase all that Guatemala has to offer, including a marked acidity, fragrant aroma, balanced body, and clean lingering finish.

Finca Tehuya was established in 1883 by Jose Godoy Letona, who had a passion for coffee growing and liked the Acatenango region very much for the quality of its coffees as well as for its spectacular valley and the proximity of volcanoes. Three generations later his grandchildren Alfredo and Miguel manage the family farms. Finca Tehuya is innovative in their processes and has been diversifying their crops for resilience. The farm’s passion is always to produce the best quality coffee in harmony with the environment, while taking care of their employees.

Finca Tehuya has 200 hectares under cultivation between 1500 and 2000 meters above sea level and the average age of the coffee trees is 7 years old. Fully washed processing includes a 24-hour fermentation and concludes with drying on the patio and in rotating guardiola dryers.

Region

Acatenango is in the heart of Guatemala’s coffee growing mountains between Atitlan and Antigua. Coffee from Acatenango Valley is grown under dense shade, creating coffee forests with many ecological benefits to the human and natural environment. Regular eruptions from the nearby Fuego Volcano keep the coarse, sandy soils full of minerals, but an eruption in 2018 proved more fatal than those in recent years.

Temperate winds from the Pacific and clearly marked wet and dry seasons provide the ideal conditions for coffee production as well as for the drying stage of processing. Acatenango sees temperatures of 14-31 degrees Celsius and 1220-1830mm of annual rainfall.
