Farm info

The municipality of Alfonso Claudio is blessed with countless waterfalls, a tropical climate, and geography with many microclimates conducive to specialty coffee production. Francisco has worked his entire life caring for coffee and other crops as a laborer; he knew how to produce specialty coffee but did not have a way of applying that knowledge, which he gained by working in coffee for the majority of his 55 years. Six years ago, his dream of having his own property became a reality. Francisco, known as Chiquinho, named his own land to plant Sitio Liberdade.

Francisco constantly evaluates his property and observes changes in foliage and cherry size on the trees, planning ahead for smaller harvests due to reductions in rainfall. The Arabica varietals on the farm always leave Francisco happy for the cup scores they deliver, no matter the harvest size. “In 2015-16 we had a low total rainfall and had to strip pick some of the trees, reducing production and the quality of the beans,” he explains. “We always want to harvest at the last possible second so we can have the ripest beans.”

Family farming has been fruitful for Francisco and, without the collaboration of his wife Maria, it would be difficult to achieve such good results without the collaboration of his wife.

Region

Montanhas do Espirito Santo

The Montanhas do Espirito Santo region is dominated by small-scale coffee-growers and is characterized by the presence of farmers who are actively engaged in the entire chain of the production process. Growers in Espirito Santo work with family members and build off of traditional knowledge to innovate and improve their quality of life and coffee. Located in the southern area of the Espirito Santo state, where mild temperatures (73ºF) and steep highlands (between 700 and 1,000 meters) favor growing Arabica coffees, this region produces a superb quality coffee with a round body, nice acidity, and fine sweetness. While the most common process for the region is Natural, Pulped Naturals are increasing in popularity.
