Farm info

Nestled in the Lacco Valley, where the Andes descend into the Amazon, lies the community of Toroqmayo—a proud contributor to the story of Café Orígenes. This coffee is more than just a drink; it embodies the resilience, dedication, and rich biocultural heritage of the Quechua indigenous communities who have cultivated these lands for generations.

The farms in Toroqmayo are small yet impactful, each covering less than 5 hectares. Among the 130 farms managed by the cooperative, Isauro’s stands out. A young farmer with deep roots in the region, Isauro exemplifies the hard work and determination that define Toroqmayo’s coffee producers. His two farms, Conccayhorcco and Nogalniyoc, span 1.5 hectares and are managed under a sustainable agroforestry system, harmonizing with the lush biodiversity of the region.

Despite coffee farming being a tradition in the region for over 50 years, the cooperative’s establishment in 2021 marked a turning point. Officially constituted in April 2022, it has enabled farmers like Isauro to achieve consistent growth, with an average annual production increase of 10% and an 11% rise in income compared to previous years. Coffee cultivation in Toroqmayo is a meticulous process. After careful harvesting, coffee cherries undergo a washed process. They are fermented aerobically in traditional ceramic pits for 48 to 72 hours, allowing the natural enzymes to bring out the beans’ distinctive flavors. Once fermented, the cherries are depulped and dried for 10 to 20 days on shaded raised beds, ensuring their quality and consistency.

With support from the Andean Alliance for Sustainable Development, Toroqmayo’s farmers are redefining sustainability. Demonstration farms showcase innovative agroforestry techniques focused on biodiversity conservation, efficient water use, and increased organic production. Isauro’s farm has been a vital part of this initiative, adopting practices that improve both environmental sustainability and coffee quality. The story of Toroqmayo’s coffee is also the story of its people. Every sip supports not only exceptional coffee but also community reinvestment. The profits from each harvest are reinvested into training and resources for the farmers, fostering a thriving and sustainable future for Toroqmayo.

Toroqmayo’s unique location in the Manu Biosphere Reserve, one of the world’s most biodiverse ecosystems, makes it an ideal origin for specialty coffee. The region’s high altitudes, cool temperatures, and fertile soils create the perfect conditions for cultivating coffee with a distinctive flavor profile. Each cup of coffee from Toroqmayo tells a story of dedication, harmony with nature, and the enduring legacy of the Quechua communities. By choosing this coffee, you’re not just enjoying exceptional quality—you’re supporting a mission to preserve biodiversity, uplift small-scale farmers, and sustain an ancient agricultural heritage.
